LoMPTY, which stands for "Light of My People Temple Youth", is Congregation Or Ami's youth group for grades 9 - 12. In LoMPTY, our teenagers have the opportunity to socialize with other Jewish teens, explore and live Judaism on their own terms, and gain leadership skills that will help them excel in all aspects of their lives. LoMPTY encourages our high schoolers to shape their experience and activities at Or Ami. With guidance from our Youth Advisor, a teen Board runs LoMPTY. The Board decides on the activities, plans and runs the programs. They invite other LoMPTYites to take on leadership roles such as photographing events, designing publicity, playing music at our Havdalah services, all while creating a welcoming and fun environment.
Events include: Movie Marathon, Bowling and Ice Cream Party, Mall Scavenger Hunt, Luau-themed Shul-In (overnight), Creative Service and ‘Vegas’ Dance, Social Action projects, Six Flags Road Trip, and End of the Year Pool Party!
LoMPTYites also lead Shabbat services for the whole synagogue and mentor younger students in our learning programs. LoMPTYites play leadership roles in Triple T: Tracks for Temple Teens, Or Ami's teen engagement programs.
Join LoMPTY's Facebook group for updates and more photos. Join NFTY's Southern California's Facebook Group to keep up with all going on for teens in So Cal.
LoMPTYites also participate in the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY), the national youth group for the Reform movement which represents around 500 Temple Youth Groups in North America. LoMPTY is particularly active in NFTY's Southern California Region (NFTY SoCal), which has 250 teen participants. Through NFTY So Cal, our Jewish teenagers connect other teens throughout California and the country. LoMPTYites participate in NFTY So Cal retreats: the Leadership Training Institute (LTI), Fall Conclave, Social Justice Kallah (SJK), West Coast Party, Regional Board Elections, and Spring Kallah.
Our teenagers attend NFTY’s summer trips to Israel, Avodah and CIT sessions at Camp Newman (Santa Rosa, CA), summer leadership programs at Kutz Camp (Warwick, NY), and the 1500 teen-strong NFTY Convention.
Or Ami teenagers create an outstanding, meaningful youth group experience that allows them to develop individually, bond as a group, and create life-long relationships with each other and Judaism.
We are delighted to welcome Lily Gottlieb, our new LoMPTY Youth Group Advisor, to the Or Ami family. Lily Gottlieb grew up in North Hollywood and attended the California Institute of the Arts, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography. She has been an active member of the Los Angeles area Jewish community, having worked with regional NFTY SoCal as well as teaching in Or Ami’s Mishpacha program this past year. She has also worked at Camp Newman, developing a variety of youth and arts education programs. During summer 2014, Lily is serving as a Madricha for NFTY’s Israel Adventure teen tour. Lily is eager to begin her work with “the great young people in LoMPTY,” and has lots of innovative ideas to share for the coming year’s events. Her photographic skills will assuredly inspire many budding shutterbugs, and her enthusiasm and commitment to Jewish youth will surely make her a new favorite face around Congregation Or Ami. We welcome Lily in person in mid-August. Until then, please address any questions about our youth programs to Rabbi Julia, or her assistant Laurel Murray, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
